May 14 - Hervey Bay to Booyal - 130 km

Left the hostel early and headed along the beach side road but were forced to backtrack after Point Vernon as we missed a turn off.  Fortunately some friendly locals came to our assistance with some directions. One of them was touring cyclist himself having cycled from Scotland to Switzerland and then Zurich to Budapest last year.

The detour was a short one and we were soon on our way to Burrum Heads where we stopped for morning tea. Burrum Heads is quiet fishing village. We enjoyed our scones beside the boat ramp.

We saw this deal at the sleepy village of Burrum Heads.  I was going to get my hair colored if Joe got his eyebrows waxed but he wouldn't be in it.

Joe has also been looking for a more stable bike since his flamboyant dismount at Cabrita Beach Cycles.  He saw this and thought it would suit him.

We had to again backtrack to Torbanlea to get to the Bruce Hwy. Our detours cost us 30km today.

Saw this great house on the way to Torbanlea.

Just after we hit  the Bruce Hwy and finally headed toward our intended destination we passed through the small town of Howard. Not much to see although there is a timber mill, Howard Sawmill that had the slogan "adding value by bringing life to hardwood". Tony remarked that this was the first time he had ever seen Howard  and hardwood in the same sentence. Not sure what he meant?

We made good progress and reached Childers about 1.00 pm having ridden 105 km.

It was pretty warm and Tony tried to cool off at the supermarket.

Childers has a number of heritage buildings with big verandahs. We sat in front of one in the shade to eat our lunch and then made our way to some nearby gardens for a nap in the shade.

The next rest stop with free camping was another 50 km so we decided to head for it but after 25 km we called it day and set up camp at the back of truck stop. With no light it was an early night in the tent and the usual thunderous roar of trucks throughout the night.

Another great sunset.

  2. Joe - you should have taken Tony up on the offer...with the proviso that he gets a pink hair colour!
