May 7 - Ulmarra to Evans Head - 100 kms

Early start on quiet roads through dairy farms to Lawrence where we crossed the river on the ferry.

The gateman on the ferry told us it was the busiest in NSW.  Here is Joe engaging in meaningful conversation with the ferryman.

It was lovely cycling beside the river past sugarcane fields until we reached Maclean (37 kms), a nice little town on the river, where we stopped for morning tea, banana bread, coffee and to update the blog. The whole of the Clarence Valley is very beautiful and Maclean looks like a top spot for a visit.

After morning tea we pushed on up the Pacific Highway. The road while not flat was not challenging and we knocked out another 30kms before stopping for lunch at Tabbimoble rest stop. While we were there an old Hi-Ace van pulled in with some young backpackers in it. They looked like they were off to Nimbin.  The van had flowers and peace symbols on it.  We thought these attractive girls were hanging around for us. Turns out they were just waiting for the picnic shelter.

We stopped for a drink at Woodburn before turning off to Evans Head. The last 10 kms seemed like a slog and we were glad to finish in this seaside town.

Booked into the caravan park, went for a swim and then spent about an hour in the shower washing sunscreen and dirt off.  Fantastic!!!
